Hey. I'm Billy Marshall. The site you're on, the Happiness Test, the Your Happier Life Workshop, and the Your Happier Life podcast are all run by Your Happier Life, a New Jersey nonprofit corporation ("Your Happier Life," "we," "our"). I founded it and I run it. This page tells you what we collect when you visit yourhappier.life, what we do with it, and how to make us stop. I wrote it in plain English on purpose. If something here is unclear, email me and I'll fix it.

What we collect

Your Happier Life keeps this minimal on purpose.

When you take the Happiness Test:

  • Your email address, plus your first and last name if you choose to enter them. Only the email is required. The name fields are optional.
  • Your answers to the test questions, stored temporarily in your browser's session storage so a refresh doesn't lose your progress while you're taking the test. These never leave your device unless you submit the email gate at the end. They clear automatically when you close the tab or browser.
  • If you leave the "Send my results to my inbox" box checked at the email gate, three computed values get sent to Kit (the service that delivers our emails) and saved on your subscriber record there: your overall happiness score, the band that score lands in (Top fifth, Above the middle, Middle, Below average, or Bottom fifth), and a text breakdown of your scores by section, chapter, and tool. Kit needs those values on your record in order to populate them into the welcome email it sends you. If you uncheck the box, the values are not sent and we have no record of them.
  • If you uncheck that box, only your email and any name fields you entered get saved. Your detailed results stay on the page in your browser only.

When you sign up for the Workshop or use other parts of the site:

  • Your email address and any name fields you enter on the signup form, saved on your subscriber record at Kit.
  • Standard web traffic data that Podpage (the platform hosting this site) collects on its end, like your IP address and which pages you visited. This is aggregate site analytics; we don't see anything that identifies you personally from it.

That's it. Your Happier Life does not collect payment information on this site. We do not collect health or medical information. We do not buy data about you from anyone else.

How we use it

Your Happier Life uses your email to send you:

  • The welcome email that goes out after you take the Happiness Test or sign up for the Workshop.
  • Occasional newsletters and updates from me about the Workshop, the podcast, and my work on happiness research. Realistic frequency: once or twice a month.

We use your Happiness Test score and band to personalize the content of the welcome email. The email shows you the same numbers you saw on the results page, in a saveable format you can come back to.

Your Happier Life does not sell your information. We do not share it with anyone for marketing purposes. The only third parties that see your data are the services we use to operate this site, listed below.

Where your data lives

Kit, Inc. (formerly ConvertKit) stores your email subscriber record, including your email address, your first and last name (if you provided them), and the Happiness Test custom fields described above. Kit is the email service provider we use to send our emails. Their privacy policy is at https://kit.com/privacy.

Podpage, Inc. hosts this website. Standard web server logs (IP addresses, page views, and similar) live on their infrastructure. Their privacy policy is at https://www.podpage.com/privacy.

Your own browser temporarily stores your test answers in a feature called session storage while you're taking the test. Session storage is private to your browser, on your device, under your control, and clears automatically when you close the tab or browser. You can also clear it manually by clicking "Start over" on the test results page or through your browser's settings. The Happiness Test does not write any data to your browser's longer-term local storage.

Your rights

You can do any of these at any time, no questions asked.

Unsubscribe. Every email Your Happier Life sends has a one-click unsubscribe link at the bottom. Click it and you're off our list. Kit handles this automatically.

Delete your data. Email us at the address below and ask us to delete your subscriber record. We'll remove it from Kit. You should see your unsubscribe and deletion reflected within a few business days.

See what data we have on you. Same address. We'll send you a copy of what's on your subscriber record.

Update your information. If you want to change a name or correct an email, send us the change and we'll update it.

Cookies and session storage

The Happiness Test uses session storage in your browser to keep your in-progress answers if you refresh the page during the test. Session storage is not a cookie, but it serves a similar purpose for one specific feature. It clears automatically when you close the tab or browser, and you can clear it manually any time by clicking "Start over" on the test results page or through your browser's settings.

Podpage may use a small number of analytics cookies on its end to track aggregate site traffic. These do not identify you personally. If you want to disable them, your browser's privacy settings let you block cookies from this site.

Your Happier Life does not run any third-party advertising trackers, social pixels, or behavioral profiling tools on this site.

A note on mental health

The Happiness Test is a self-reflection tool built on validated, public-domain happiness items from research instruments. It is not a clinical assessment, and the results are not a diagnosis. If your results worry you, or if life feels heavier than just a tough year, please talk to a qualified mental health professional. The work in the Workshop is powerful, but it is not therapy. There is no shame in needing both.

If you are in crisis or having thoughts of harming yourself, please reach out for immediate support. In the U.S., you can call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, free and confidential, available 24/7. Outside the U.S., a list of international crisis lines is available at https://findahelpline.com.

Changes to this policy

If we update this page, we'll change the "Last updated" date at the top. For any change that meaningfully affects how Your Happier Life handles your data, we'll send a notice to our subscribers before it takes effect.
